Castel Sallegg Winery, Caldaro al Lago 3 vineyards, 30 hectares under vine, the Caldaro terroir Castel Sallegg is a magnificent manor house in the midst of the vineyards of Caldaro. It once belonged to Archduke Rainer of Austria and passed to the Counts of Kuenburg through inheritance. Today, Georg Count Kuenburg runs the splendid estate with its three historic vineyards and thirty hectares under vine. The terroir in the glass. The grapes for the Castel Sallegg wines are grown on the best sites around Lake Caldaro and on the gently rising slopes around Caldaro village. The unique interplay of landscape and soil, and a mix of Mediterranean and Alpine climate give the wines their distinctive character. A particular speciality of Castel Sallegg is the rare Moscato Rosa, a variety that was introduced by an ancestor from Sicily, the Prince of Campofranco. Two other outstanding wines are the Merlot from the Nussleiten site and the authentic Lago di Caldaro Scelto Classico from the “vigna” Bischofsleiten. Descending eleven meters and three stories into the 1000-year-old wine cellar is a journey into the past. There, in an atmosphere of solemn quiet, the wines rest and mature at a constant temperature all year round. Tradition and history form the foundations of the winery, while curiosity and an innovative spirit drive the work in the cellar. While the wine matures to perfection deep underground, state-of-the-art cellar technology is in place for the wine making. Future In 2022 the winery is presenting itself in a new and elegant look that shows how timeless modernity can go hand in hand with a great tradition. Castel Sallegg is launching an innovative, exclusive lightweight bottle made of 100% recycled glass and featuring intelligent details such as the sommelier bottle head. There are also new wine labels in a standardized design, while floral ornamentation and new wine names express the historical links between the Count’s family and wine.
