About us

Villa Vitas is a historic winery located in Strassoldo, a little historic village in Friuli Venezia Giulia, in the northeastern part of Italy. Unlike most large Italian wine companies, Villa Vitas produces only wines from its own grapes, ensuring care and sustainability at every stage from vineyard to cellar.

Originally founded in 1900 as a pure wine trading house, its first home was the duty-free port of Trieste, an important hub for international wine trade. Out of love for wine and winemaking, Romano Vitas purchased a historic estate in Stassoldo, including an 18th-century villa, in 1937. The company has remained family-owned and is now managed by the great-grandchildren of Romano Vitas, reaching the fifth generation.

Family tradition and love for the land remain the guiding principles at Villa Vitas. The wines aim to be traditional and typical of the region, reflecting the historical and cultural heritage of northern Italy. To preserve their character, Villa Vitas emphasizes environmentally friendly cultivation. Extensive sustainable practices in the vineyards demonstrate respect for the land, its soil, and the local community, earning the company SQNPI certification, an EU certification of sustainable production. The yield per hectare is intentionally low, ensuring more concentrated grapes and higher-quality wines.

Situated near the Mediterranean and protected by the Alps, Villa Vitas enjoys an ideal microclimate for fine grape growing. Mild winters and steady, moisture-carrying winds protect the vines and allow optimal development. Nutrient-rich clay soils with diverse minerals give the grapes a fresh, mineral taste. Under these conditions, Friulano, Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Ribolla Gialla, Traminer Aromatico, Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, and Cabernet Franc form an excellent basis for varietal, characterful quality wines.
